The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that
St. Nicholas soon would be there;
“The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While
visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for
a long winter's nap.”
Oh well! Atleast not a mouse wasn’t stirring.
“Mystique! Oh Mystique! Where do you want us to
put these gifts?” Night Mistress hollered, as the entourage flowed into the house.
“Under the tree of course NM!” Mystique answered,
coming from the kitchen.
“OH! You have one of those?” Lady Shyann asked,
flanked by Takersangel. Night Mistress turned towards her with a glare.
“Yes LS! Every year.” Mystique answered, eyes
expressionless. She turned and went back into the kitchen mumbling something. Jane and Dark Lady made it in just in time to
hear what was said.
Shan brought up the rear. Finding a seat, slank down in
it. She wanted to get a ringside view of the going-ons. This would be her first Christmas with the group.
“I can’t believe you asked that stupid question,
LS.’ Night Mistress shaking her head.
“What?” Takersangel asked, confused with what
was the big deal.
“TA! Just because she is a mystic.....doesn’t
mean she doesn’t celebrate Christmas.” Jane said sternly.
“Du-uh!” Dark Lady added going to the room
where the huge beautifully, decorated white tree stood in the midst of the room. She placed her presents underneath it.
The lights blinked off and on around the tree, giving
it a glowing appearance. A Golden Angel was placed at the very top of it. The wings seem to spread apart, as if it were preparing
to take flight. All were in awe of the majestic of this unusual tree. Shan stood in the doorway, observing the interactions.
“Do you think she decorated it or thought it up?”
Takersangel whispered loudly to Lady Shyann.
“Of course she did. She couldn’t have possibly
decorated anything so beautifully. Without her magic.“ Lady Shyann replied with an equally loud whispered.
“Listen you two, we’re here to have a nice
time. Let’s not be upsetting Mystique.” Dark Lady admonishing them after overhearing the whispers. Night Mistress
just rolled her eyes, letting out a slow breath.
“Okay! You’re so right. I know she’s
worried about if Ladyhawke and Nightwalker will make it. We’ll be on our best behavior.” Takersangel promised.
“Yeah! Right!” Jane interjected and turned
to Shan, who had never moved from her place in the doorway.
“Ooooo look!” Lady Shyann hollered, causing
each to slightly jump.
All eyes followed her pointed finger towards the great
red bricked fireplace ablazing. There hung stockings with each person’s name, that was a part of the life of Mystique.
“Oh wow! She really does celebrate Christmas.”
Lady Shyann said, admiring the different stockings.
“And they are all hand woven.” Jane said,
running her hand over the one with her name on it.
“And they are so different from anything I’ve
seen before.” Dark Lady added.
“Hmmmm! I wonder what is this material.” Night
Mistress turned to Dark Lady and Jane, with a puzzled expression. Jane gave a gestured for her not to ask. Dark Lady’s
eyes looked towards Lady Shyann and Takersangel.
“They are made of a VERY special material. Only
my family have knowledge.” Mystique startled the group, as she made her way into the room, carrying a tray of hot apple
cider and cinnamon sticks. Shan was at her side, finally encouraged by her to join the group.
“What kind of material is that M?” Takersangel
asked, reaching for a cup of the apple cider. All was just as curious. Shan seem preoccupied with the Angel on the tree.
“If I tell you. I will have to kill you.”
Mystique gave a long menacing stare at Lady Shyann and Takersangel. She knew this would halt any further discussion on the
matter.
Lady Shayann and Takersangel’s eyes grew larger
than life. They knew how Mystique could get sometimes if provoke. Night Mistress, Jane and Dark Lady could barely hold their
laughter.
Mystique began to laugh, which started a chain reaction.
All were amused with how serious Lady Shyann and Takersangel had taken Mystique.
Realizing they had been fooled, Takersangel and Lady Shyann
turned to each other, then joined in with the others. Shan turned her head towards the group, taking in how well everyone
seem to fit.
She thought, where was her place in all of this. Mystique
eyes turn to meet hers, smile etched across her face. She seem to be telling her, ‘you will find it as the others‘.
Part Two
All had decided to get a nap in before the night’s
events. It had been a long and exhausting journey. Mystique sat near the fireplace relaxing, deep in thought. Drinking her
hot apple cider, when she felt someone’s eyes on her. She looked up to see Shan standing in the doorway
“What’s wrong Shan?” She asked, sitting
her cup on the small table next to the chair.
“Nothing. Just wanted to thank you for inviting
me to spend Christmas with all of you.” She answered, slowly walking over to the tree. Mystique watched her with great
consideration.
“No need to thank me Shan. Whether you realize it
or not. You are part of us.” She said softly. Shan’s eyes stayed fixed on the tree, mesmerized by it. She reminded
Mystique of two others, whom were just as taken in by this tree when she first put it up, many years pass.
It was a winter night. The forecast said a storm was approaching
rapidly. But Ladyhawke and Nightwalker knew they had to get to their mother.
“Nightwalker! The storm is gathering speed. I can
hardly see ahead of us.” Ladyhawke yelled over the gales to her sister.
“I know Sister. We shouldn’t have tried to
make this trip. We could’ve have waited until the morning.” Nightwalker replied.
“NO, Sister!! We couldn’t. We have to be with
Mother before midnight.” She said frantically. Nightwalker sat next to her sister, taking a quick glance in her direction.
She could see on her face, something was terribly wrong.
Shan had left Mystique to herself. But she wouldn’t
be alone for long. Night Mistress had felt she seemed unusually quiet and awfully distance.
“Okay M. Tell me what’s going on?“ Night
Mistress asked, gliding into the room. Mystique startled for a moment, quickly gathered herself.
‘Damn! How does she do that?‘ She thought
to herself. Night Mistress was one of the few people who were able to come upon her, without her knowing of their approach.
“Nothing is wrong, NM!“ She answered, taking
a slow sip of the hot apple cider. Eyes staring directly into Night Mistress, void of emotion.
“Hmmmm!“ Night Mistress said, tilting her
head with arched eyebrows. If one thing she knew about Mystique, you have to be very cunning to get anything out of her. She
would discuss it with Jane and Dark Lady later. Maybe between the three, they could discover what has Mystique in such a mood.
“Okay. So are the men going to make it in tomorrow?“
She asked, changing the subject.
“Markus said they would be in early morning. I hope
everyone makes it in time. I desperately do.” She trailed off with the last sentence. Night Mistress’ eyes narrowed,
as they washed over her friend. Something wasn’t right here at all. Only if Markus was here. He would know what to do.
“Markus are you sure they’re sleep?”
Christian asked, as the limo wind it’s way down the road.
“Yes, Christian. I’m very sure they’re
sleep. It’s a tradition of theirs to nap before they plan what little pranks they are going to have set up for us.”
Markus answered as he drifted off, thinking how many times he had been the butt of their jokes.
“But not this year.” Kane injected with a
devious smile to each of the other men.
“Yeah!” Triple H sounded triumphantly. He
too has fallen victim to the group of pranksters.
“Okay, stop the car!“ Markus yelled to the
driver.
“We’re almost there, let’s go over this
one more time.” Markus turned to the men and began to go over the plan.
“Here you are.” Jane said as Dark Lady and
her joined Night Mistress by the fireplace. Dark Lady nudged Jane.
“What?” She asked looking to her sister. Dark
Lady tilted her head in the direction of the doorway.
“WOW!!” Was all she could say. Entering the
room was Mystique with a tray of apple cider. Seven in counting.
“Damn! How does she do that?” Dark Lady said,
as they all let out a round of laughter.
“So I gather the others will be joining us soon?”
Jane asked as she took a cup from the tray offered to her. Mystique smiled, knowingly.
“I was asking Mystique about the men and if they
would make it in time.” Night Mistress turned to the two women. They began to beam.
“Oh really?” Jane sipped from her cup as she
thought of spending Christmas with Triple H.
“Wooooo!! I know what Jane is thinking.” Dark
Lady teased. Jane gave her sister a gentle shoved.
“Oh like you aren’t thinking the same about
Kevie.” She sent back to her.
“Mmmm! And to see Markus again! Awwww.“ Night
Mistress went into a daze. Mystique sat down in her chair smiling, as she glanced over the assembly of her friends.
“Enough with the fantasizing. We need to think of
a nice jester to play on the men this year. Hahaha!!” Night Mistress chuckled.
“Yeah NM! It’s going to be hard to top last
year’s though. Woooo!” Dark Lady began to roll.
“Oh yeah! That was a good one, NM.” Jane complimenting
Night Mistress through her laughter. Mystique sat quietly smiling, sipping from her cup. Watching and listening.
SUDDENLY.....................!!!!!!
“IT’S HIM! IT’S HIM!!!” The cries
came as the three ladies jumped from their seats, startled out of their wits.
‘What the........???” They yelled in unison.
Takersangel and Lady Shyann came bounding down the stairs yelling loud enough to wake the dead.
All grew silent.......from outside came the strangest
noise they had ever heard.
Part Three
“The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre
of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,“
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment
it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by
name;”
"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on
CUPID! on, DONDER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away
all!"
Moving as one, clustered together. They all slowly made
their way to the outer room to investigate the noise growing louder. And it seemed to be heading their way.
Shan stood at the top of the stairway. The yelling and
heavy footsteps on the floor had awaken her. Mystique sat by the fireplace smiling.
“It’s him I tell you! It’s him!”
Lady Shyann reiterated.
“Yes I know LS! I know! I saw it too.” Takersangel
confirming with Lady Shyann. As they moved to the window. They looked diligently. The noise grew closer and closer. Louder
and Louder. They all gasped. They could hardly believe their eyes. It was him.
“Santa Claus???“ Night Mistress, Jane and
Dark Lady said together, looking at each other to see if the others had seen the same.
Yes! It was Ole’ Saint Nick, coming down the road,
in his sleigh, drawn by his reindeers. Night Mistress bottom jaw was almost hit the floor. Jane’s eyes nearly protruded
out of their sockets. Dark Lady thought her heart had stopped a couple of times.
Takersangel and Lady Shyann hearing the three proclaiming
it was Santa. Darted out the door to greet him, before the others could stop them. Shan slowly made her way down the stairs.
She looked into the room where Mystique sat, drinking
her cider. She glance up to Shan, then went back to gazing into the fireplace, clearly with something on her mind.
Meanwhile..............
“Do you think we will make it Nightwalker?”
Ladyhawke turned to her with fear engulfing her eyes. Nightwalker looked long into the dark eyes of her sister, she had never
seen her so full of fear as this before.
Ladyhawke’s heart sunk. She knew unless there was
an miracle, they wouldn’t make it in time.
“Why is it so important to get there before midnight?”
Nightwalker asked, gently urging the horses on. The winds were now blowing at a greater tempo.
“I don’t want to talk about it right now Nightwalker.
Please, let’s just try to get through this and home to Mother. Or nothing will ever matter.” She spoke these words
with amounting sorrow.
Nightwalker wasn’t sure what was going on. She knew
one thing. If Ladyhawke said they needed to get to their mother. Then that‘s where they will be.
Then......without warning!!!
Blinded by the snow flying in their faces, they took a
nosedive. They never saw the trench ahead of them. The horses first. Then the carriage carrying Ladyhawke and Nightwalker
followed. Their shrills were drowned out by the gusting winds.
“OH!” Mystique screamed, with a such agony.
Shan head snapped towards her, from the window where she had been standing.
The cup hit the floor with a loud crash. The others had
ran outside to see the approaching Saint Nicholas.
“Mystique! What’s wrong?” She inquired,
hastening to her side. She clutched her heart, as if she were dying. Shan grabbed hold of her arm, guiding her into the chair.
“Something is terribly wrong, Shan. Very, very wrong.”
She said solemnly.
“Santa CLaus! Santa CLaus!” Takersangel laughed
running towards the oncoming sleigh, followed by Lady Shayann. They were so full of joy to have seen Santa. Jane, Dark Lady
and Night Mistress stood in front of the house in awe.
“Wait a minute.” Jane said as she moved from
the other two. Something wasn’t quite a right about all of this.
“What Jane??” Night Mistress continued to
look down the street as the sleigh was nearly upon them.
“What’s wrong Jane?? Where’s Mystique?”
Dark Lady asked as she for the first time noticed she hadn’t accompanied them outside.
“This whole thing.” Jane answered, slowly
walking to meet the sleigh. Night Mistress and Dark Lady looked at each other shrugging. Then followed Jane.
“Why is Santa here at 7 o’clock?” Jane
said as she came to halt and waited as the sleigh was nearly in front of the house with Takersangel and Lady Shayann running
along aside of it.
“Huh??” Night Mistress said as her eyebrows
wrinkled together. Dark Lady eyes moved about as her brain began to calculate.
“Hold up!” Night Mistress beginning to understand
what Jane was getting at. Dark Lady thought for a few moments more, then she looked at Night Mistress and they both nodded
their heads.
Finally, Santa and sleigh stopped in front of the home
of Mystique. Takersangel and Lady Shayann were bubbling.
“Ho! Ho! Ho! Merrr-rie Christmas!” He boomed
in a very deep, loud voice.
“Well, well, well.” Night Mistress said, arms
crossed, eyebrows raised.
“Yeah, Ole Saint Nick here to visit us.” Dark
Lady added, hands on hips, tapping one foot.
“And so early. Not even midnight.” Jane continued
the greetings.
“Um. Uh.....hummph! Well I heard you ladies were
especially nice this year and felt you deserve your presents a little early.” he tried to explain.
“Oh yes! Yes! Santa I’ve been very good this
year.” Takersangel interrupted.
“Me too Santa. Me too!” Lady Shayann cried.
Oh but Jane. Don’t you think Santa is awfully BIG??”
Dark Lady said, moving up and circling him. He became very fidgety.
“Oh yes DL! I know Ole Saint is a big man. But Damn......didn’t
know he was so huge.” Jane answered, coming to stand in front of him, sizing him up.
“But I thought he didn’t get his magic until
around 12 midnight.” Night Mistress said staring at him closely, then her mouth gasped open after discovering something.
“Ladies! Come over here.” She took Dark Lady
by the arm and they moved away from Santa, Takersangel and Lady Shayann.
“Oooooh!” A voice said. Then movement from
the heap. A hand pushed the carriage over. The horses made it to their feet and were standing around. Nightwalker clumsily
lifted herself from the ground, to her feet.
“Oh my head.” A softer voice could be heard.
Nightwalker slowly moved over to assist Ladyhawke. She took a seat on the ground, staring into space. Nightwalker assessed
the damage.
“Mystique! What is going on with you?” Shan
asked. It was getting late, nearing 7 o’clock. The clock announced the hour. Mystique looked up to it. She seemed to
be becoming frail in appearance.
“I just need my daughters here with me. I feel something
awful has happened to them and they won’t make it in time.” Is all she would say.
Part Four
“As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they
meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys,
and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and
pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a
bound.”
The three ladies finished conversing. Slowly made their
way back to Saint Nick and his fans. But elsewhere, nine pairs of eyes were closely watching the show. The BIG Show that is.
“Damn!” Markus yelled, walking away kicking
the snow. The other’s turned to look at him.
“What Mark?” Jeff asked, looking at what was
happening down the street and back at Markus.
“Can’t you see? They are on to him. I knew
one of us should have done this. He’s sticking out like a sore thumb.” Markus yelled, coming back pointing down
the street.
All men looked closely at what was going on from their
hiding place. It was clearly the way he was being approach by the three sly women, the joke was on them. Once again.
“Damn it! Just for one damn time, I wish we could
get them back for all the jokes they have played on us.“ Triple H begin to rant, jumping up and down. Christian, Matt,
Jeff and Edge glance at him for a moment, then turned back down the street.
“Well it appears it won’t be this year.”
Kane agreed, walking away from the advantage point towards the car, shaking his head.
“Well the jigs up.” Kevin conceded. Ten heads
and they couldn’t put forth a decent plan.
“Well I knew all along this was a stupid idea. Everyone
knows Santa doesn’t get his magic until midnight. Sheesh.” Christian said nonchalantly looking down the street,
shrugging his shoulders,
Kane caught Markus just in time, pulling him backwards.
Christian was oblivious to the happenings behind him. He never knew what almost hit him.
“Hey! Something isn’t right. Where’s
Ladyhawke?” Rob Van Dam observed. Markus stopped struggling with Kane, gazing down the street.
“What, Rob?” Edge asked, confused. He didn’t
see anything wrong. Markus did. Where was Mystique?
“Mystique! What is going on? Tell me!” Shan
was clearly getting upset. She needed to go get the others.
“I’m going to get Jane and the others.“
She told her, pulling away and heading for the door.
“NO!! Please don’t. It’ll spoil their
Christmas.“ She grasped Shan’s arm, eyes pleading with her. Shan felt it wasn’t an good idea to not let
the others know, but it was more important she helped Mystique.
Meanwhile..............
“Well that’s that. We‘re stuck out here
in no man‘s or woman, land.” Nightwalker came to sit by her sister, after viewing the wreckage.
“Oh NO! Tell me it’s not true! We’re
not going to make it home?” Ladyhawke became hysterical. Nightwalker was dumbfounded. She had never witnessed this side
of her sister before. She has always been the composed one.
“Ladyhawke! Stop it! You’re really freaking
me out here! If you go nuts on me, what am I to do?” Nightwalker’s eyes began to water. Something was not right
here.
“Why was it so important to get to mother before
midnight?” She asked Ladyhawke. She gave a long look at Nightwalker, gather herself, and let out a long breath. It was
no use trying to keep it from her any longer. After all she was her sister. And they were connected. As was their mother.
“Okay! If you’re Santa, why aren’t you
up on the roof, coming down the chimney. Instead of parading down the street for all to see you? Huh? Tell me that, if you
can.” Night Mistress badgering the witness.
“And if you’re ole Saint Nick. Where is Rudolf??
Tell me that?” Dark Lady following suit.
“You two raise up good questions. But what I want
to know. Where are your elves?” Jane began to laugh, peering down the street in which direction he had come.
“Damn all that. Where the hell are the presents?”
Lady Shayann yelled, as Takersangel and her were up in the sleigh prowling. The three ladies looked pass him at the two diligently
searching for presents. Then Night Mistress folded her arms across her chest. Dark Lady put her hands on her hips, tapping
her foot. But Jane continue gazing down the street.
“I think I spot Santa’s little helpers. But
the ain’t all that little.“ She nodded her head, placing her tongue against her cheek. Santa blew out a long hard
breath. The jig was definitely up.
Markus had slipped away from his group. He had a feeling
something was wrong if Mystique and daughter’s weren’t with the rest. He came around the back of the Ladies and
slipped in the house. His heart sunk as he watched the scene before him.
“Mystique? What the hell is going on here?”
His voice filled the room. Shan jumped, moving away from him as he quickly moved into the room in front of Mystique.
Markus grasped her arms in his huge hands. His emerald
eyes broke her heart. How could she withhold from him the truth? She cast her head downwards, unable to bear it anymore. She
broke.
She wailed like a banshee. The sound carried throughout
the house and outside. Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned towards the house. Markus held her close to his heart.
She listen to the rhythm of it’s beat. She found comfort in it. Then she succumbed to the darkness.
“Okay! I’ll tell you. We should have told
you this long ago. But Mom felt it better you didn’t know. She wasn’t sure how you would handle it.” Ladyhawke
began, very hesitant.
“Tell me what? You’re really beginning to
spook me now.” Nightwalker felt a chill come over her. She stood, closing her eyes, sensing something.
“You feel that don’t you Nightwalker?”
Ladyhawke asked her.
“Yeah! I have a pain in the pit of my stomach. You
know what it is don’t you.“ Nightwalker opened her brown eyes, stared into her sister’s.
“Yes! It’s Mom. If we don’t get there
by midnight. She will be no more. Mom, you and I, are bonded. By our hearts. Mom was dying one Christmas Eve. A mystic friend
of hers was able to save her. But not with a price.“ Ladyhawke explained to Nightwalker.
“And the story goes........I don’t think I
want to here the rest of this. Do I?“ Nightwalker sunk to the ground. The chills were overcoming her.
Part Five
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And
his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a
peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses,
his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the
snow;
“We brought her life. Every seven years, we need to be there to renew her spirit. Or she dies.” Ladyhawke
explained to her sister. Nightwalker stared long and hard at her sister in disbelief.
What the HELL, are you talking about? Have you completely
lost it. Let me check your head. Then you bum it and all your sense went pouring out of it?” Nightwalker began to rave,
leaving her sister and stomping away.
“Nightwalker! Listen to ME!! We need to get to her?”
She said as tears formed in her eyes. Nightwalker stopped abruptly. There was something in her sister’s voice. Something
that tugged at her heart. She knew, everything her sister told her was the truth.
But it wasn’t the realization of the truth. It was
the pain she felt each time her mother and sister were together. She always felt a part from them. They seem to have more
in common than her. Even with knowledge so important. She was ignorant of the fact. But not her sister, Ladyhawke.
Meanwhile..............
Night Mistress was the first to bolt. She knew something
was terribly wrong for Mystique to let out such a blood curdling scream. The others ran close behind.
“What’s going on?” Matt noticing all
rushing into the house. The men looked towards the house, alarmed.
“Where did Mark go?” Kane asked, looking around.
Then ALL looked at each other for a VERY quick second, then raced down the street to the house.
Night Mistress and others came to an halt. They stood
looking at the scene before them. Markus was holding limp Mystique in his arms. She looked like a ragged doll. He was carrying
her to her room.
“Markus!” Night Mistress started. He looked
long into her dark eyes. He saw the confusion and fear behind them.
“Not now. I’ll be back as soon as I tend to
her.” He said, then continue up the stairs. Jane and Dark Lady moved pass Night Mistress into the room Shan stood staring
up to the tree.
“Shan! What happened here?” They inquired.
She continued to look to the Angel above.
“Shan? What happened, hon?” Jane moved slowly
towards her. Dark Lady looked around the room, hoping she could find some clue.
“She needs her daughters.” Is all that finally
left her lips. Tears veiled her eyes. Her mouth began to move. Nothing audible to human ears came from them. But her words
were heard.
“What is going on NOW??“ Night Mistress turned
towards the front door, hearing the rumbling sound approaching. Jane and Dark lady left Shan in the other room, after hearing
the noise also. Only Santa stood quiet.
“What’s going on here?” Kane was the
first to hit the door.
“We saw all of you run into the house like it was
on fire.” Triple H added, followed by the rest of the men. The Ladies looked at each other then back at the men.
“So Trippie, babe. Were you in on this little comedy?”
Jane asked, walking up to him, running a finger up and down his arm. Triple H took a deep breath.
“All of them planned this except for me and Matt.”
Christian proceeded to inform her. Kane thought, if he could, he would kick himself in the butt for saving him from Markus.
“Big SHOW!” Dark Lady laughed, running by
and pulling the fake beard off his face.
“What the.......Big Show??? You‘re not Santa?”
Lady Shyann screamed.
“Yeah. We figured it after we sized him up.”
Night Mistress informed her, a wave of laughter from Her, Jane and Dark Lady ensued. waved.
“WOOO!! You are so dirty. What a horrible trick
to play. Do you know how many little kids would be hurt knowing you weren’t the real Santa?” Takersangel hollered,
coming to stand in front of him and poking her finger hard into his stomach. That’s as high as she could reach.
“And you didn’t even have the decency to bring
some presents.” Lady Shayann surmised.
“Come on LS! I don’t want to look at any of
them another moment.” Takersangel said, glaring at the group of men hanging their heads in shame.
“But honey. We were just trying to keep in the tradition
you ladies began.” Kane walked up to Shyann, catching her by the arms and gazing deep into her eyes. She felt her heart
melting. He had that affect on her.
“Yeah sweetheart. What he said.” Edge pleading
his case. Takersangel wasn’t so easily taken in. She walked over to Lady Shayann, grabbed her arm and began to move
towards the stairs.
“You guys better be aware. Watch your backs. Sleep
with your eyes open. This night I will not be an ANGEL.” Takersangel warned them. Eyes as slits. Then proceeded up the
stairs with a struggling Lady Shayann.
“Yeah! What she said.” Dark Lady said, causing
the remaining women to laugh loudly. The men just looked at each other. They knew what the failed prank had just cost them.
Part Six
“The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad
face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when
I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;”
Markus descended the stairs with a very grim appearance.
Night Mistress was the first to see him. She stood, watching and waiting. His eyes caught her. Her heart jumped with fear.
“What is it Markus? Is she alright? Should we call
a ambulance?” Night Mistress began, moving towards him. He pulled her into his arms.
All stood around, fearful from the expression on Markus’
face, all wasn’t well. It seems now the pranks weren’t all that important. Only if all of them could be together.
“It doesn‘t look well. I don‘t think
it‘s a good idea to let anyone to take her to the hospital. They can‘t do her any good.“ Markus looked at
everyone solemnly.
“Where is Ladyhawke and Nightwalker. Shouldn‘t
they be here by now?“ Rob asked. Everyone had been so wrapped up in the games, they hadn‘t realized the time.
“Yeah. They should‘ve been here or at least
called their Mother. Don‘t you think?“ Jane looked from one face to the other.
“I don‘t know guys. But I have the sinking
feeling something is wrong. It‘s not like those girls to be late or not call so Mystique won‘t worry.“ A
course of murmurs began to flow amongst the group, with the revelation from Night Mistress.
“I’m going to make a few calls. See if they
had departed. There was a storm brewing where they were. They may have been delayed.” Markus left the group, going to
make the call.
Shan had slipped up to the stairs to the bedroom of Mystique.
She stood near the bed, watching her. She seem almost seem dead, Shan felt.
She jumped, letting out a squeal as Mystique’s eyes
flew open and her hand grabbed Shan’s arm. She looked into the fearful eyes of Shan’s.
“I need my daughters here. I’m so worried
about them. They should have been here by now. Where’s Markus? I need him here, now. Please get him. PLEASE!!”
Mystique pleaded. Then weakest overcoming her, relaxed back onto the bed. Eyes barely open. Shan darted from the room.
“Ladyhawke, along with Nightwalker, left hours ago.
I was also informed they made have encountered the massive storm on their way. Hopefully they will find lounging and wait
it out until morning.” Markus said reassuringly to the group.
“Markus! Markus! Mystique needs you!” Shan
yelled from the top of the stairs. Markus came to the bottom of the staircase. With one look into the eyes of Shan, demised
something had happened. With the swiftness of an gazelle, he was up the stairs and in the room of Mystique.
“Markus! I’m worry about Ladyhawke and Nightwalker.
I need them here, before the stroke of midnight.” She said weakly.
“Be still, darlin‘. Everything will be just
fine. You’ll see.” Markus felt helpless. He didn’t want to alarm her. But he had gotten the word, Ladyhawke
and Nightwalker had left on their journey hours ago. Due to the storm, he hoped they weren’t out in it.
Shan over hearing the frantic plead from Mystique. Grabbed
her coat, scarf and gloves from her room, slipping unnoticed pass the group assembled in the room near the fireplace.
She ran and jumped in the sled. And with a gentle stroke
from the whip, urged the reindeers on. She knew the sleigh could move easily over the terrain and through the storm. No one
knew of her departure, but Mystique.
Meanwhile....................
“Nightwalker, come here. I need you to let me finish.”
Ladyhawke held out her hand to her sister, beckoning to her. Nightwalker half turned, staring at her sister. Ladyhawke saw
the pain in her sister‘s eyes. She felt she knew what was behind them.
“Please come to me. At least listen. It may make
a world of difference.” Ladyhawke said, eyes pleading.
Nightwalker stood for a moment, staring out into the wind
and snow, contemplating all that was happening the night before Christmas. She felt after this night, nothing would ever be
the same. Whether it was a good thing. She hadn’t the foggiest idea. But in her heart. She knew she needed to hear this
out. For her mother’s sake.
“Do you remember about seven years ago when Mom,
you and I began playing this little game?” Ladyhawke asked her sister. Nightwalker frowned, trying to figure out what
game she was talking about.
“Ladyhawke. Mom played a lot of games with us. How
do you expect me to remember any particular one. Especially one so long ago.” She responded, a little annoyed with all
the mystery.
“Something is wrong with mom. The feeling is getting
stronger. And you want to play these silly guessing games?” Nightwalker snapped at her sister. Ladyhawke could see she
was clearly anxious.
“Okay! You’re right. I know you feel Mom and
I have been leaving you out of a lot of things. But that isn’t true. Tonight mom had planned to tell you. Heck, she
didn’t tell me until my seventeenth birthday.” Ladyhawke explained. Nightwalker looked at her sister with tilted
head.
“Yeah. SO you weren’t the only one left in
the dark about all of this. You know Mother. She does things in her own way and her own time.” Ladyhawke, shaking her
head.
A smile formed on Nightwalker’s face. She looked
at her sister nodding her head in agreement. She realized they weren’t leaving her out. It was just the way of her Mother.
Her own time and her own way. That just about sums her up.
“As I was saying. Mother explained it to me on my
birthday. Every seven years since we saved her life. She needs to be renewed. That‘s when we played this game.“
Ladyhawke began to inform to her sister. Suddenly a spark of recollection touch Nightwalker‘s mind.
“I remember something. I thought it was a dream.
Something a long, long time ago. We were nearly babies then.“ Nightwalker rose to her feet, walking around in a daze,
as she began to formulate the vision she thought she had configured.
Part Seven
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled
all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney
he rose;
“Stop her!” Mystique yelled. Markus looked
at her bewildered. Night Mistress entered the room nearly out of breath. She was anxious to tell him something. Markus looked
up to her. He waited for her to speak. She beckoned for him to come closer. Mystique groaned.
“Shan has left with the sleigh! I think she goes
to seek out Ladyhawke and Nightwalker.” Night Mistress whispered to Markus, looking beyond him to the fading Mystique.
“GREAT!! That’s all we needed is another child
lost.” Markus walked over to the window, looking out into the night. Night Mistress came up behind him, snaking her
arms around his waist.
“She not going to make it is she, my love?”
Night Mistress rested her head on his back, looking at her friend, so lifeless. Markus just covered her hands with one of
his, continuing to stare into the dark sky. Then he flinched. Night Mistress felt him.
“What baby?” She asked moving away from him,
watching him squint his eyes as if trying to see something. She moved to the window to see what he was searching for.
“Nothing. It’s just my imagination getting
away from me.” He said, taking her in his arms and holding her near to his heart. She moved her arms up his back and
hugged him dearly.
“I know baby. It’s getting to us all.”
She said as she closed her eyes, hoping to block out reality. If not for just a moment.
“Where do you think she’s going, Jane?”
Dark Lady asked, as they all came back into the room, after hearing the sleigh pull off and failed attempt to stop Shan.
“I don’t know, DL. Maybe Big Show and Rob
can catch up with her.” Jane pondered, worried this was not going well at all.
“There is something different about this tree.”
Jeff walking around the tree, looking it up and down.
“Ain’t nothing wrong with the damn tree.”
Kevin said, drinking a beer. Kane just blew a breath and left the room. He felt for his brother and friend.
“No. There is something wrong with the tree.”
Jeff continued to search it diligently.
“I said ain’t nothing wrong with the damn
tree. Not get your ass over there and shut up.” Kevin finally showing his emotions.
Dark Lady went over and nudged him, beckoning for him
to follow her. Jane watched closely. Triple H glanced over to her, then came to sit next to her, pulling her close to him.
She smiled, as she snuggled into him.
“I know you’re upset, as we all are. But I
think yours also stem from something deeper feelings.” Dark Lady began, after making their way into the kitchen.
“What are you talking about?” Kevin reached
into the fridge to get another beer.
“About Jane’s decision to be with Triple H
instead of you.” Dark Lady said, waiting for his response. Kevin heads jerked around to her. The anger and pain was
evident.
“You don’t know what you’re talking
about. It’s over and finished between her and me. I’m dating you ain’t I?” He through down the beer,
then wiped his mouth and glared at her.
Dark Lady’s eyes narrowed. She stared at him, with
pain in her heart. Now she knew. She turned and left him standing along in the kitchen.
“I tell you something is definitely about this tree.”
Jeff was still going at it.
“Of course there’s something different. The
Angel is gone from the top. Sheesh, dumbo. ” Christian said coolly. Everyone’s eyes moved up to the top of the
tree.
‘Mystique laid on her bed of death. Her light was
slowly growing dim. Her small children stood back reaching and crying for their mother. Her head lazily turned towards them,
barely hearing them.
She longed to touch them. To hold and comfort them, to
let them know everything would be alright. But, she couldn’t. She knew her time was gradually coming to an end.
Just as she went to turn from her daughter’s faces,
not wanting to see the pain they held. A tall hooded figure glided into the room. The other’s that were in the room
cowered in fear. The presence always had that affect on people.
“Mystique! My sweet Mystique! What are you doing?”
The voice deep voice filled the room, like the sound of many roaring thunders.
Mystique looked into the emerald eyes beholding her. She
gasped. She hadn’t seem these eyes in eons.
“Markus? Is it really you?” She spoke just
above a whisper. Now close to death’s door. He removed the hood to reveal himself.
“Yes! It’s me.” He said, gathering her
into his arms.’
“Ladyhawke! Now I remember!! The mystic friend who
helped Mother. It was Markus!” Nightwalker yelled out.
Part Eight
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they
all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
With all the information she had gathered. Shan moved
swiftly towards her destination. Heading due North. Straight into the oncoming storm. Something appeared to be leading her.
Where? She had no idea. But her gut feelings were, that’s where she would find the girls.
“Oh! So impulsive. I should have had a better plan.
How will I know if I’m going in the direction? Only for a mere hunch.” Shan thought to herself.
“It doesn’t matter. I have to find them. For
Mystique’s sake.” Shan continued to reason with herself.
“Where does she think she going?” Rob looked
at the sleigh, driven Shan.
“I don’t know Rob. But she is going into that
storm forecasted. I wonder does she realize it?” Big Show replied. They could feel the storm approaching. The air was
becoming very dense and cold.
“Hey! Look! What is that light just ahead of her?”
Rob asked pointing at the Golden Light. Big Show squint his eyes to make it out.
“I don’t know. It couldn’t be a star.
Too low.” Big Show answered, driving the SUV down the slippery road.
“Too high for street lights.” Rob added looking
over at Show.
They were closing on her. She had a nice head start. But
the sleigh was no match for the speed of the vehicle. They had nearly come upon her, when.............
“What the HELL.......?? It’s coming right
at us! ARRRRRGH!!” Show yelled. Trying to avoid the light, passing over Shan and now rushing towards them.
Show struggled with the steering wheel. Hoping he could
keep them from being forced off the road. The vehicle swerved and slid from one side of the road to the other. Finally, with
all of this, Show wasn’t able to control it. The car left the road.
“What was that noise?” Shan asked herself.
She looked over her shoulder. Not seeing anything, turned back around, continuing on with her quest. She had never seen the
light pas her by.
As she turned her head back to the road, at that moment,
the bright light appeared in front of her. It startled for a second.
“Where did that come from?“ She asked herself.
It moved with her, never coming any closer or growing any farther away. It was like a guiding light. As if beckoning her to
follow it. She did as urged.
Meanwhile...................
“What are you talking about Christian? There weren’t
no Angel at the top of that tree.” Said Triple H, holding Jane next to him.
At that moment Dark lady re-entered the room. Gave Jane
a quick glance, then moved to the window and took a seat. Staring into the dark, oblivious to al in the room. Jane caught
the pain in her sister’s eyes. Watched as she alienated herself from the room. She cast her eyes to the ground. She
felt this was going to be the worst Christmas yet.
“No Trip. I remember. There was an Angel at the
top of the tree.” Edge nodded his head, gazing from the top down to Triple H.
“He’s right Trippie. There was an Angel. I
guess when Shan left with the sleigh, she also took the Angel. She did seem fascinated with it.” An dejected Jane said,
crossing her arms over her chest and leaning her head on Triple H. She stared up into the ceiling.
“What is this about a missing Angel?” Night
Mistress asked, walking into the room. Markus and Kane followed, but stood in the doorway.
“There was an Angel at the top of the tree. They
figured, the young girl who took off with the sleigh. Took it too.” Christian informed her. Markus glanced over to Kane.
He in turn, looked at his brother. No one noticed the exchange.
“Oh my!” Dark Lady said, leaving her place
by the window and heading for the front entrance. All watched her rush out of the room. Knowing there had to be something
going on. Jumped to their feet and stampeded out the room.
“What is going on here?” Kevin coming from
the kitchen, as everyone nearly knocked him, rushing pass him.
“It’s Big Show and Rob. The SUV is being tolled
in.” Jeff informed yelled, looking out the window Dark Lady had abandoned. Markus and Kane remained in the doorway,
preoccupied with the top of the tree.
“What happened?” Jane asked, reaching Show
and Rob. Dark lady looked over her vehicle. Assessing the damage.
“DL! I’m sorry babe. That blinding light came
right at us. I tried my best to regain control. The slippery road was just too much. We went off the road. Luckily there was
a bush that stopped us.” Show sorrowfully explained to Dark Lady.
“DAMN! What is this? The Christmas from HELL??”
Dark Lady yelled. Then tears began to flow.
Jane went to her sister, embracing her. She knew as much
as she tried to appear strong. Her sister was just as sensitive to the people around her, as she was. Not only did their outward
appearance resemble, but inside, they were very much alike.
“DL! Let it go, hon. He’s not worth the tears.
Why do you think I’m not with him?” Jane said, leading her sister away from the mess outside and into the house.
Show felt so bad. He looked at the wreckage, turned from it and followed the ladies into the house.
“You know what Kev? You are a big ass loser. Not
only did you lose a Great lady. You managed to lose another. Merry Christmas asshole.” Triple H spouted at his friend
and walked away. The remaining others barely acknowledged Kevin, as they too turned and went to join the rest.
“Damn! Damn! Damn!” Kevin shouted out loud.
He kicked at the ground so hard, he lost his balanced. His feet left the ground. He landed flat on his back. He laid there
for a bit.
“Yeah. Merry Christmas all!” He sarcastically
remarked, then slowly came to his feet brushing himself off, hoping no one saw what had occurred.
Part Nine
“Though the tempest rages around and the gales roar
All is not lost. For there is a peace within.
It calms the storms and stills the air.”
“You remember that far way back??” Ladyhawke
asked her sister, noticing something seem different.
“Yes! For some reason, I always had that reoccurring
dream. I never knew what it was all about. Markus face didn’t come as clear to me, until tonight.” Nightwalker
replied to her sister. The winds had long pass them. Everything was calm now.
“Hmmm! The storm has pass. We need to find away
to get to mother before Midnight.” Ladyhawke, realizing with all that had happened. Everything was quiet.
“Well! We could ride bare back on the horses. We’ll
get there much faster.” Nightwalker suggested. She walked over to see how the horses were doing.
“Only if we don’t run into the storm. It’s
right in our path.” Ladyhawke, was staring at something strange in the distance. Nightwalker turned to say something
to her when she noticed her looking at something. She walked up to her sister to see.
“What are you looking at?” Nightwalker asked,
looking in the direction her sister’s eyes focused in on.
“I’m not sure. But I thought I saw someone.”
She took a few steps forward. Nightwalker tried to see if she could make anything out.
“Yes, Nightwalker. See it....it’s.........What?”
They both let out a loud gasp.
Meanwhile.........................
“DAMMIT!!” Shan yelled. The gales had surrounded
her. The bright light had vanished. She was forced to take cover behind a huge tree. how was she ever going to get to Mystique’s
daughters in time. She felt herself becoming desponded.
“I just wished I could have made a difference. But
alas, I think Mystique’s not going to be helped by me.” She demised. She took covered as much as she could.
Then as quickly as it had rushed upon her, the winds moved
on. All was still. Shan moved from behind the tree, puzzled.
“What the..........??” She stopped as she
saw the light slowly approaching her. There was something else coming towards her too. She gasped.
Markus and Kane turned to see Jane and Dark Lady enter
the house and head up stairs. They could see Dark Lady was very upset by something. Jane seemed to be trying to comfort her.
Night Mistress was right on their heels. Whatever it was, she seemed to be fuming.
Show and Rob made their way in next. From the look on
their faces, they weren’t fairing any better than the ladies. They headed towards the kitchen. They felt a drink was
in order.
Triple H came after. He stopped momentarily at the foot
of the stairs, thought. Then decided he would get himself a drink also. Matt, Jeff, Christian and Edge slowly moved into the
house. All talking at once. They looked up at the two brothers staring at them, then moved on to the kitchen.
“What you two staring at?“ Kevin slugged in,
rubbing his back and butt. He gave the brothers an glared. Then he walked in the room, slouching down in the couch.
“Not much.” Kane replied, glaring back at
him. Markus remained silent. His thoughts were far from the going ons here.
“What are you two doing?” Night Mistress asked
Lady Shyann and Takersangel.
“We were doing something important. And as we were
coming down the hallway, we heard Mystique moaning.” Lady Shyann explained, with a strange look on her face.
“Yeah! And so we came to see if she was alright.”
Takersangel with even an stranger look on hers. Night Mistress, raised an eyebrow. She knew those two were up to something.
And had a feeling they all will know soon enough.
Jane and Dark Lady stood at Mystique’s bed. Everything
that had just happened, didn’t seem so great. Their friend was slowly slipping away and there seemed nothing they could
do about it.
Night Mistress, along with Shyann and Takersangel, came
to her bedside.
“Are we going to lose her?” Takersangel asked,
feeling this pain swelling up inside her.
“She looks so fragile. I never seen her look like
this ever. It’s eerie.” Lady Shyann, perceiving her vulnerability.
“We don’t know? We can only hope a miracle
happens.” Night Mistress, not able to stand it any longer moved to the window. She stood looking out into the starry
night.
Jane gestured to one Dark Lady, they went to join her
at the window. They stood on either side of her, placing an comforting hand on her shoulder. Each stood staring, whispering
their own little prayer.
Suddenly, Night Mistress flinched. Jane and Dark Lady
looked at her.
